What is homebrew?

Homebrew usually refers to software that is not authorized by Nintendo. You can launch Homebrew on most Wii U system versions which will allow you to run homebrew games, backup and restore your saves, back-up and install games, and use emulators for various older systems.

Custom Firmware (CFW) will enable you to install custom titles to your Home Menu, such as the Homebrew Launcher. This will allow for easier homebrew access.
